Cam Newton Defends Panthers Fans Amid Criticism of Xavier Legette

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers‘ all-time leading passer, spoke out in defense of Panthers fans during an appearance on Friday’s episode of First Take. His comments come after criticism aimed at current wideout Xavier Legette, who has had a rocky start in his second season.
Legette, a first-round pick in 2024, has struggled significantly in the early weeks of the 2025 season. He has only recorded eight receiving yards on four catches and has become the first player in NFL history to accumulate negative receiving yards in a game with at least eight targets.
Newton echoed sentiments expressed by former teammate Steve Smith Sr., who criticized fans for their harsh judgments of Legette. On WFNZ‘s The Kyle Bailey Show earlier this week, Smith remarked, “That’s what this city does well, is [expletive] and complain.” He reflected on the challenges faced by the team during his rookie year in 2003, emphasizing the need for unwavering support from fans.
“If you’re gonna ride and die with your team, ride or die,” Smith added, highlighting the issue of fair-weather fans in the community. “These young men … nobody’s perfect. But when you ain’t never did it … you earn your way and right to give your criticism. But don’t poop on the guy as if he’s not out there trying to do his best.”
Newton also addressed Legette’s performance, urging him to focus on the fundamentals of the game. “Lock in! Keep the main thing the main thing. Your time is ticking,” Newton said on his show, 4th & 1 with Cam Newton. He emphasized the importance of solid play despite the distractions surrounding the NFL.
The Panthers’ recent loss to the Arizona Cardinals extended their streak to four consecutive 0-2 starts. The team has not achieved a winning season or made the playoffs since 2017, when Newton last led them on the field.
