Cambridge Dictionary Names ‘Parasocial’ Word of the Year Amid Swift-Kelce Buzz
Cambridge, England – Cambridge Dictionary has announced that its Word of the Year for 2025 is ‘parasocial,’ a term attributed in part to the high-profile relationship between pop star Taylor Swift and NFL player Travis Kelce. The announcement highlights the growing phenomenon of one-sided connections that fans form with celebrities and influencers.
The dictionary’s press release mentioned that interest in these parasocial relationships has surged, fueled by Swift’s emotionally charged lyrics about love and heartbreak. ‘Millions of fans relate to Taylor Swift’s confessional lyrics, leading to what psychologists describe as ‘parasocial’ bonds with stars,’ it stated.
Swift and Kelce’s engagement announcement in August captured widespread attention. The couple shared their news with a playful message, stating, ‘Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨.’ Fans took to social media to express their excitement, with one writing, ‘Crying happy tears for our girl!’ Others echoed similar sentiments, sharing their joy and disbelief.
The phenomenon of parasocial relationships extends beyond music icons; it includes influencers and podcasters. Kelce, 35, is the cohost of the popular podcast which further connects him with fans. The release suggested that the informal, personal nature of podcasting may create bonds that people often seek from real friendships.
In separate royal news, former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor continues to face scrutiny as he lost his royal titles due to his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. On November 8, King Charles attended the Festival of Remembrance, marking the first royal event after Andrew’s title removal.
During the festival, Prince George made his official debut, following a tradition that began with his father at a similar age. Meanwhile, Princess Catherine, the 37-year-old Princess of Wales, participated in Armistice Day services, reinforcing her royal duties amid family controversies.
