2025 Cape Town Marathon Cancelled Due to High Winds

CAPE TOWN, South Africa – The 2025 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was abruptly cancelled early Sunday morning due to severe winds. Organizers made the announcement at 4:45 AM, just 90 minutes before the race was set to begin.
More than 24,000 runners were scheduled to compete in this year’s marathon, but many were already on their way to the race venue when they received the news. Communications went out via direct WhatsApp messages and social media to inform participants about the cancellation.
The strong winds caused damage at the Green Point precinct where the event was to be held. Marquee tents were torn apart, prompting emergency meetings among organizers and the Joint Operations Committee (JOC), which includes local police and safety representatives.
Clark Gardner, CEO of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, expressed regret over the cancellation. “We have worked for months on planning for all scenarios and conditions, but ultimately a bigger force had the final say,” he said.
Colonel Christo Engelbrecht from the SAPS explained the safety concerns regarding the marathon route. “The wind is constantly gusting and the infrastructure at the start and finish venue has been compromised. It’s unsafe for runners and pedestrians, which is why we made this collective decision,” he said.
The Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the city’s commitment to safety in high-standard events. “I’m grateful to the event organizers for prioritizing runners’ safety in light of the situation,” he said.
Though the event was highly anticipated and considered a step toward gaining status as a World Marathon Major, this cancellation represents a significant setback. Organizers have promised to communicate refund options and potential virtual event alternatives within 48 hours.
Despite the disappointment, many runners began to create their own routes and organize informal runs, showcasing the spirit and resilience of the local running community.
