Cardinal Dolan Distributes Food in the Bronx for Holy Thursday

BRONX, N.Y. – Cardinal Timothy Dolan participated in a food distribution event hosted by Catholic Charities on Holy Thursday in the Bronx. The event, aimed at serving local communities during the holy season, drew several volunteers and contributed to the wider efforts of the Church to address food insecurity.
At the event, Cardinal Dolan personally handed out food packages to families, emphasizing the Church’s commitment to helping those in need during the Easter season. ‘It’s an honor to serve alongside so many dedicated volunteers who share our mission to uplift our community,’ Dolan said.
Local residents were grateful for the support, as many face economic challenges exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic. According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food insecurity affects over 10% of households in the Bronx, making such initiatives vital.
The food distribution served over 200 families, providing them with essential items including non-perishable food, fresh produce, and hygiene products. Volunteer Joan Martinez expressed her satisfaction: ‘Seeing families receive food and knowing we are making a difference is what keeps us going.’
The event coincides with Holy Week, a significant time for reflection and community service in the Catholic tradition. Catholic Charities has scaled up its efforts this year, responding to increased demand for assistance.
In the spirit of Holy Thursday, which commemorates the Last Supper, Cardinal Dolan reiterated the importance of service, stating, ‘As we remember the joys of this holy season, let us also reflect on our responsibility to care for one another.’
As families prepared for Easter celebrations, many expressed their gratitude for the support received. ‘It takes a village, and we are so thankful for those who care,’ said Bronx resident Luis Garcia.
The Church aims to host similar events throughout the year, reflecting its enduring commitment to community service and support for the vulnerable.
