Carlo Acutis to Become First Millennial Saint of the Catholic Church in 2025
Carlo Acutis, a British-born Italian who gained international recognition for his devotion to the Eucharist and his innovative use of technology to document Eucharistic miracles and Marian apparitions, is set to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in April 2025. Acutis, who passed away on October 12, 2006, at the age of 15 due to leukemia, has been on a rapid path to sainthood since his beatification by Pope Francis on October 10, 2020.
The canonization process was advanced after a second miracle attributed to Acutis’s intercession was recognized. The miracle involved a Costa Rican woman named Valeria, who suffered a brain hemorrhage after a bike accident but miraculously recovered after her mother prayed for Acutis’s intercession and visited his tomb in Assisi. This miracle was confirmed by Pope Francis on May 23, 2024, paving the way for Acutis’s canonization.
Acutis will be canonized during the Jubilee of Youth from April 25-27, 2025, with the formal ceremony scheduled for Sunday, April 27. This event marks a significant milestone as Acutis will become the first millennial to be declared a saint by the Catholic Church. His canonization is seen as a testament to his extraordinary faith and his unique approach to using technology for spiritual purposes.
Acutis’s body, which was exhumed and brought to the Sanctuary of the Spoliation in Assisi in 2019, is now venerated by pilgrims. Although his body appears incorrupt behind a view glass, it is actually encased in a wax layer to preserve its appearance for devotees.
His life and legacy have inspired many, particularly among the younger generation, due to his cheerfulness, computer skills, and deep devotion to his faith. Acutis’s story highlights the intersection of modern technology and traditional spirituality, making him a contemporary figure of great religious significance.
