Champai Soren Denies Joining BJP Speculations
Ranchi: On Saturday, August 17, 2024, Champai Soren, a leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, addressed rumors suggesting he might join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In a media interaction, Soren mentioned, “I don’t know anything about such speculations and reports… I am where I am,” emphasizing his commitment to his current party.
The speculations arose following a meeting between Soren and a former JMM legislator, who has allegedly been in contact with BJP leaders. However, Soren clarified that their discussion was routine and did not hint at any political shift.
Mr. Hembrom, the former legislator, recently faced disqualification as a JMM MLA under the anti-defection law, fueling further speculation regarding potential defections within the party.
Upon arriving in Delhi after a trip to Kolkata, Soren dismissed any notions of party-switching. He stated that he was in the capital for personal matters and denied any meetings with BJP leaders. “How would I meet anyone if I don’t have any events here?” he questioned.
Support from his party members echoed Soren’s sentiment. Other JMM legislators, like Dasrath Gagarai and Samir Mohanti, strongly affirmed their loyalty to the party. They emphasized that rumors about Soren’s potential shift to the BJP were unfounded.
Political analysts noted that if Soren were to join the BJP, it could significantly impact the upcoming Assembly elections, particularly among the tribal voter base in the Kolhan region. However, they also warned that such a move could lead to internal party strife within the JMM.
Soren has a solid base in regions like Potka, Ghatshila, and Bheragora, where he previously received substantial support during elections. In the last assembly elections, the coalition led by JMM secured a good number of seats, with BJP trailing not far behind.
