Chicago Immigration Raid September 30 2025

CHICAGO, Illinois — A large-scale immigration raid by federal agents on September 30 has left residents of a South Shore apartment complex traumatized. The operation, part of a broader crackdown on undocumented immigrants, saw 37 individuals arrested, mostly believed to be linked to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as armed federal officers, aided by helicopters, stormed the building in the early hours, detaining adults and children alike. “It was an invasion,” said Darrell Ballard, a neighbor who witnessed the events. He reported seeing agents flood the parking lot with military vehicles and a Black Hawk helicopter flying overhead.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that the building was targeted due to its association with criminal activities. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker condemned the raid, stating, “Federal agents are snatching up families and frightening law-abiding residents.” He argued that the operation violated due process rights and focused on creating community panic.

Residents, including U.S. citizens, recounted traumatic experiences. Pertissue Fisher described having a gun pointed at her face and being handcuffed, despite having no outstanding warrants. “They treated us like we were nothing,” she said. Other witnesses noted that children were ziptied and escorted away with their parents.

DHS claimed that at least four U.S. citizen children were taken into custody for their safety amid concerns about potential human trafficking. As the raid unfolded, many nearby residents ducked for cover from the flashbangs and chaos.

As a response to the federal action, protests erupted across Chicago, with demonstrators criticizing the government’s aggressive tactics. Organizers claimed the raids were a tactic of intimidation against immigrant communities. President Trump, meanwhile, suggested deploying the National Guard to assist with similar operations in the future, which has raised alarm among Illinois officials.

City officials have indicated that ICE’s recent tactics are harsh and unacceptable. Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized the need for local law enforcement to protect residents rather than cooperate with federal agencies conducting raids.

In the wake of this raid, questions linger about the future of immigration enforcement policies and the impacts on families in Chicago.
