MANILA, Philippines — Authorities arrested a Chinese national linked to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and two Filipino accomplices on Monday, January 21, 2025, for their alleged involvement in an espionage operation targeting critical infrastructure across the country.

Jeremy Lontoc, chief of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Cybercrime Division, revealed during a press briefing that the suspects were tracked using a covert GPS device installed on their vehicle. The operation reportedly aimed to map key infrastructure, raising concerns about national security.

“The intelligence operation began when we detected suspicious movements tied to the group,” Lontoc said. “Their activities were consistent with espionage tactics, prompting immediate action.”

The Chinese national, whose identity has not been disclosed, is believed to have direct ties to the PLA, China’s military force. The two Filipino suspects are accused of aiding in the operation, though their specific roles remain under investigation.

Authorities seized equipment used for mapping and surveillance, which Lontoc described as “sophisticated and capable of compromising critical infrastructure.” The NBI is working with other government agencies to assess the extent of the potential security breach.

This arrest comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with neighboring countries expressing concerns over China’s growing influence and alleged espionage activities. The Philippine government has yet to comment on whether the operation was state-sponsored.

Further details, including the specific infrastructure targeted, are expected to be released as the investigation progresses. The suspects are currently in custody and face charges under the country’s cybercrime and national security laws.
