Coastal Flood Advisory Issued Ahead of Expected Storm in New Jersey
NEWARK, New Jersey — The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory for Hudson, Essex, and Union counties. The advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday due to expected heavy rainfall and strong winds.
According to the weather service, areas near the waterfront and shoreline may see one to two feet of inundation above ground level. “Minor flooding is likely in vulnerable locations such as parking lots, parks, and homes with basements,” the agency stated. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect flood-prone properties and to avoid driving around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
The storm system currently tracking over Tennessee is anticipated to bring significant rainfall to New Jersey. Initial rain is expected early Thursday, with steady rain continuing through the day. Windy conditions and possible thunderstorms may accompany the rain, especially in the afternoon.
Forecast models indicate New Jersey could receive between 1 to 3 inches of rain, with higher totals along the New Jersey Turnpike corridor. This rain is exacerbated by Hurricane Melissa, which has caused devastating impacts in the Caribbean. Though Melissa will remain far from New Jersey, its tropical moisture will enhance rainfall amounts.
Winds will likely reach 30 to 40 mph, causing potential power outages and downed trees, although it is not forecasted to reach warning-level intensity. Residents along the Jersey Shore should prepare for minor coastal flooding, which is expected to affect typical vulnerable areas during high tide.
As for Halloween on Friday, the forecast calls for a dry day, but windy conditions will persist. Temperatures are expected to remain cool, with high temperatures only reaching the mid-50s. Trick-or-treaters should prepare for gusty winds and cooler weather while enjoying their festivities.
As the storm passes, conditions should improve by Friday night, with a pleasant and cool weekend expected ahead.
