As the U.S. Senate elections approach, Texas is witnessing a highly contested battle between Democratic U.S. Representative Colin Allred and incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz. Cruz has also launched ads criticizing Allred’s stance on transgender inclusion in women’s sports, an issue that has become a hot button topic in the 2024 election cycle.

Allred has responded to these attacks with a campaign ad stating he does not want “boys playing girls’ sports,” despite his past legislative support for bills that would enable transgender athletes to participate in sports teams corresponding to their gender identity. Tarrant County, which includes Fort Worth and its suburbs, is crucial for Allred’s success. The area has seen tight contests in recent elections, with O’Rourke narrowly defeating Cruz in 2018 and President Joe Biden securing a similar margin four years prior. Allred’s ability to perform well in this county could be pivotal in determining the outcome of the election.
