Colt Knost Critiques Patrick Reed’s Ryder Cup Attitude
NEW YORK, New York — Former PGA Tour player Colt Knost recently shared his opinion on Patrick Reed‘s performance and conduct during the 2018 Ryder Cup. Reed, who has been a topic of controversy in golf, faced criticism after the U.S. team struggled at Le Golf National in Paris.
At the time, Reed held a strong 6-1-1 record from previous Ryder Cups. Despite this, several teammates reportedly did not want to partner with him due to his conduct. Knost pointed out that Reed had previously earned 2.5 points paired with teammates at Hazeltine in 2016, but the atmosphere shifted before the matches in 2018.
During the Ryder Cup, Reed partnered with former champion Tiger Woods, but the tandem struggled, losing to European players Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari. Knost expressed discontent with Reed’s post-match remarks that blamed his captain Jim Furyk‘s decisions. Reed told The New York Times he felt “blindsided” by the pairings, suggesting a “buddy system” favored select players.
Knost, speaking on a podcast, emphasized that Reed’s comments greatly diminished his respect for the player. “He had the opportunity to go out there at The Open and make Keegan Bradley look at his name and think about it, and he went out there and missed the cut,” Knost said. “You cannot throw your team under the bus like that, when you’re paired with the greatest players of all time.”
Reed later clarified that he had no issues with his partner, Woods, or collaborator Jordan Spieth, claiming that the focus should be on teamwork rather than personal preferences. “I don’t care if I like the person I’m paired with as long as it works and sets up the team for success,” he explained.
At 35, Reed’s chances of making a future Ryder Cup team appear slim, especially with the emergence of Woods as a possible new captain and Reed’s ties to LIV Golf. Knost’s critique may underscore the challenges Reed faces in reclaiming his standing in the competitive sport.
