Comedian Janey Godley has announced that she is now in “end of life” care after discovering that her cancer treatment options have been exhausted and the disease has further spread. The Glasgow-born performer shared this development in a heartfelt video message posted on social media.

“I’m out of options,” Godley said. “I’m now in palliative care and am looking at the end of it.” The 63-year-old comedian expressed her gratitude to the National Health Service (NHS), fans, and even critics during this emotionally charged announcement.

Godley’s recent health update led to the cancellation of her upcoming ‘Why Is She Still Here?’ tour, as medical professionals advised her to cease working “for the foreseeable future.” She emphasized that her latest diagnosis was decisive in ending the tour.

In her statement, she expressed gratitude towards various NHS departments, particularly naming the Beatson Oncology Clinic and the Royal Infirmary. “It’s devastating to know that I’m facing the end of life, but … we all come to an end sometime,” she stated.

The comedian gained widespread popularity for her humorous videos that featured dubbed pastiches of Nicola Sturgeon‘s COVID-19 pandemic briefings. She was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November 2021. Although declared cancer-free in 2022, subsequent scans revealed the disease had returned.

Despite the diagnosis, Godley continued to perform earlier this year, with shows scheduled across the UK, including stops in Bristol and Milton Keynes.

On her social media, Godley thanked her supporters, especially her family, stating: “The overwhelming support has been amazing.” Encouraging others battling severe illnesses, she added, “Cancer affects one-in-two people, and it’s affected me.”

The outpouring of support following her announcement has been significant, with public figures such as chef Nigella Lawson and former First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon expressing their sympathy and praise for Godley. Sturgeon tweeted, “Sending you so much love, my friend. You are an inspiration.”
