Comedian Shyam Rangeela, renowned for his impersonations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has announced his decision to run against the Prime Minister in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024 from the Varanasi constituency.

Varanasi, a parliamentary seat in Uttar Pradesh, is set to vote in the seventh phase of polling on June 1, with results expected on June 4.

The incumbent member from Varanasi, Narendra Modi, is preparing to file his nomination on May 13, having won the seat in both 2014 and 2019 for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Shyam Rangeela, originally from Hanumangarh in Rajasthan, found fame through mimicry, especially his viral videos imitating PM Modi’s speeches and mannerisms. Initially rising to prominence in ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ on television, Rangeela later shifted to digital platforms to keep his comedic work alive.

Besides mimicking Modi, Rangeela has also parodied other political figures, including Rahul Gandhi. His critical take on Modi’s governance and policies has gathered both praise and controversy.

In a recent video announcing his candidacy, Rangeela cited the absence of opposition candidates in many constituencies, reflecting on the need for alternative choices on the ballot.

Rangeela’s entry into politics traces back to his brief stint with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2022. However, he later opted for an independent path, asserting his autonomy.

Recalling his transformation from a Modi supporter to a disillusioned critic, Rangeela highlighted restrictions that hindered his comedic expressions, triggering his shift in perspective.

Given Modi’s presence in Varanasi, the electoral contest in the constituency assumes significance. The Congress has fielded Priyanka Gandhi Vadra‘s aide, Jai Prakash Agarwal, who previously ran for the seat in 2014 and 2019.

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, contested the Varanasi seat in the 2014 elections and secured the second position. In the mix is Sakhi Gopal, a transgender candidate, adding diversity to the high-profile contest.
