John Fetterman Senator News

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Concerns about U.S. Senator John Fetterman’s engagement and health have intensified following a recent article published in New York Magazine. The piece reported allegations from former staffers who claim he has been disengaged from his responsibilities as a senator. One unnamed former staffer described Fetterman as ‘disengaged,’ stating, ‘It’s pretty impossible to overstate how disengaged he is.’

The report highlighted an incident during a May 1 meeting with representatives from two major teachers’ unions, where Fetterman reportedly became frustrated and yelled at the group over concerns about federal education cuts. After the meeting, former staffers raised concerns regarding Fetterman’s mental health, medication adherence, and overall ability to perform his duties.

Fetterman, 53, publicly defended himself, stating he has never felt better and calling the New York Magazine article a ‘hit piece’ fueled by disgruntled staff. In a statement, he acknowledged having a ‘spirited’ discussion with the teachers’ group but maintained that he is committed to supporting public education.

Concerns are not limited to his mental health. Data indicates that Fetterman has missed 29 out of 236 votes since January, marking one of the worst attendance records in the Senate. His absence from public events has also been notable; since August, he has made only one in-person appearance in Pennsylvania, raising eyebrows among constituents.

Multiple former aides, speaking on the condition of anonymity, expressed worries that Fetterman is not effectively managing his responsibilities as a senator. One described his schedule as ‘sparse,’ noting he averages only two hours per week in meetings while colleagues typically engage in much more.

Former staffers mention that he often cancels meetings at the last minute and spends time scrolling through his phone instead, potentially affecting his relationships with fellow senators and constituents. Some team members remain supportive, recognizing his unique style and the challenges he faces since his hospitalizations in recent years due to a stroke and depression.

Fetterman has attempted to engage with key issues, sponsoring several bills during his tenure, but his public engagement remains low. His supporters highlight that after his stroke, he actively campaigned and maintained a significant social media presence, suggesting that he is still committed to his role, despite appearing less active lately.

As the senator contemplates a potential presidential run in 2028, criticisms of his attendance and engagement are likely to remain in the public eye. For now, both supporters and critics are watching closely how he will address these ongoing concerns.
