Conclave Begins Today to Elect Next Pope After Death of Francis

VATICAN CITY, May 7, 2025 – The Vatican is set to enter a new chapter as the Conclave begins today to elect the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church. The pivotal moment comes after the death of Pope Francis, marking a crucial period for the church and its followers worldwide.
At 4:30 PM local time, the cardinal electors will gather in the Sistine Chapel. The ceremonial ‘Extra Omnes’ will usher in the closed voting process, with the first smoke signal expected around 7 PM. This Conclave involves 133 cardinal electors who have arrived from around the globe, ready to decide the successor.
During the last general congregation, the cardinals addressed pressing issues, including calls for peace in conflict zones such as Ukraine and the Middle East. They emphasized the need for a unifying figure in a divided world. ‘In a divided world, we need a Pope who brings people together, someone present and close,’ a cardinal noted.
As preparations finalize in the Sistine Chapel, the ambiance is solemn yet filled with anticipation. ‘The historical aspect of this event cannot be overstated, as it brings elector cardinals face to face with not only theological considerations but also global political implications,’ said Matteo Bruni, the Vatican spokesperson.
The cardinals are particularly mindful of the legacy left by Pope Francis, which includes a strong emphasis on compassion for the marginalized and a call for human dignity. Many believe that the next Pope should continue advocating for these values.
Meanwhile, excitement among the public and believers alike is palpable. It is expected that up to 250,000 people will gather near St. Peter’s Basilica for the announcement of the new Pope.
With a blend of reverence and eagerness, the world watches as the first round of ballots unfolds, hoping for a swift decision. The global Catholic community awaits the moment the white smoke denotes the election of the next Pontiff.
