TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-Toledo) showcased local agricultural innovation during President Trump’s joint address on March 5, 2025, by inviting Bob Jones Jr., co-owner and CEO of The Chef’s Garden in Huron, Ohio, as her guest.

Jones, a lifelong farmer known for his commitment to regenerative agricultural practices, has significantly influenced sustainable farming methods. Kaptur described him in a statement as an individual who fosters vital connections with chefs, vendors, and consumers, emphasizing “long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships that sustain both people and the land.” Under his leadership, the farm has gained international respect, producing high-quality vegetables.

During the presidential address, Kaptur presented Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy with a letter containing information on Jones to advocate for healthier farming approaches. Kaptur’s office confirmed the initiative to encourage discussions on sustainable agriculture.

The Chef’s Garden has benefited from a federal grant aimed at advancing sustainable farming practices. The grant facilitated the installation of a solar energy system projected to generate 1,741,400 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually—sufficient to power 161 homes—while reducing the farm’s energy consumption by nearly 50 percent. This investment is expected to save approximately $127,759 in annual energy costs.

“This renewable energy project allows our farm to power its LED grow lights with energy generated right on site,” stated Jones, highlighting the environmental impact of their initiatives. In addition to the USDA grant, the farm secured $2.5 million from the Ohio Department of Development and $50,000 from JobsOhio to create a hybrid renewable energy system utilizing solar, wind, and lithium battery storage, as noted in Kaptur’s statement.

Kaptur praised Jones, stating, “Bob Jones represents the very best of Ohio—ingenuity, perseverance, and a commitment to stewardship of the land and those who cultivate it.” She further remarked on how his leadership sets a national standard for sustainable agriculture, affirming that economic prosperity can go hand in hand with environmental accountability.

As plans for the renewable energy project are set to be finalized by April, both Jones and Kaptur remain focused on promoting innovative agricultural methods that align with sustainable development goals.
