Congresswoman Switches Stance on FBI Funding Amid Leadership Changes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has dramatically reversed her position on FBI funding after internal leadership changes at the agency. Greene, who previously advocated for defunding the FBI, now believes the bureau should receive increased financial support.
In a recent statement, Greene remarked, “I think we should provide [the FBI] with additional funding immediately!” This marks a stark contrast to her previous choice to don merchandise that read, “Defund the FBI.” Greene’s shift in perspective aligns with the appointment of new leaders, Kash Patel and Dan Bongino, both known for their loyalty to former President Donald Trump.
Greene’s criticisms of the FBI have been vocal and pointed. She previously argued that the agency operates as a “political weapon” and has engaged in “nefarious behavior”. However, following new appointments, her outlook appears to have changed.
The congresswoman announced on X (formerly Twitter) that she would discuss her change of heart during an appearance on Bongino’s podcast, set for February 24, but was not included in the released episode. As of now, it remains unclear whether her segment was omitted from post-production or if the interview never occurred.
Bongino, who has been appointed as the FBI’s deputy director, brings a unique background—previously serving as a Secret Service agent for Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. He is also known for his work as a conservative commentator and podcast host. During his February 24 podcast, Bongino discussed his new role, emphasizing efforts to restore public faith in the FBI. He stated, “There are a small number of really bad people out there who are planning on really bad things… I’m not going to rest easy until we find as many of you as we can.”
Despite her previous calls to reduce the FBI’s funding, Greene recently expressed gratitude towards the agency’s efforts. In a message on social media, she thanked the bureau for its dedication, a sentiment echoed in Bongino’s commitment to national security. “Every single thing I have in me, every single strand of DNA cell in my body is going to be dedicated towards keeping this homeland safe no matter what,” he stated.
Critics of the new appointments have voiced their apprehensions. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut characterized Patel and Bongino as “grifters” selected for their roles. Murphy tweeted, “Trump has chosen grifters to lead the FBI… I know this feels like a bad dream. It isn’t.”
As Bongino prepares to take on his new responsibilities, he noted his plan to record a few more episodes of his podcast before stepping away from the microphone. Greene’s newfound stance signifies a potential shift in how some GOP members view the FBI in light of recent changes in leadership.
