Dublin, Ireland — Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has announced his candidacy for President of Ireland and proposed the creation of a national Bitcoin reserve as part of his campaign platform. The announcement came during a recent post on social media platform X, where he emphasized the need to empower the people financially.

“Crypto in its origin was founded to give power back to the people. An Irish Bitcoin strategic reserve will give power to the people’s money,” McGregor stated on May 9. His comments have drawn attention from the cryptocurrency community, including responses from notable figures like Anthony Pompliano, who hosts The Pomp Podcast.

In his campaign, McGregor, who declared his independent candidacy in March 2025, is also addressing anti-immigration policies and crime. Ireland’s next presidential election is scheduled for November 11, 2025, when current President Michael D. Higgins will complete his term.

While McGregor’s idea has captured attention, establishing a Bitcoin reserve presents significant challenges, especially for a minor independent candidate. Only a few countries, such as El Salvador and the United States, have successfully implemented Bitcoin reserves.

Recently, McGregor’s political visibility increased following a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump, which may help bolster his campaign. Despite this, McGregor is under scrutiny due to a recent civil conviction, which he is appealing, and a prior investigation related to hate speech.

The proposal follows a recent setback for McGregor’s previous cryptocurrency venture, Real World Gaming, which failed to secure necessary funding during its token launch. The project could not meet its minimum requirement of $1 million, resulting in refunds for all token bidders. As McGregor moves forward with his candidacy, the intersection of sports and politics continues to be a focal point in his evolving narrative.
