Controversy Grows Over Massachusetts’ Immigration Policies Amid Criminal Releases

BOSTON, Massachusetts — Tensions are rising over immigration enforcement in Massachusetts as President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, targeted Boston and other sanctuary cities for their cooperation policies with federal law enforcement.
In a recent interview on ‘Fox & Friends,’ Homan criticized Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu for allowing the release of illegal immigrants charged with serious crimes, including child rape and fentanyl trafficking. He stated they should be ‘ashamed’ and asserted, ‘Deporting criminal illegals will be done.’
The controversy stems primarily from a 2017 ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in the case of Lunn vs. Commonwealth, which prohibits local law enforcement from detaining individuals under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) requests, leading to the release of criminal migrants.
Trump’s administration has ramped up criticism of sanctuary policies, claiming they endanger public safety. In recent months, at least seven illegal immigrants charged with violent felonies were released in Massachusetts, with bail amounts as low as $500.
Among the individuals released was Juan Alberto Rodezno-Marin, a 39-year-old Honduran national, who faced multiple charges including indecent assault and armed robbery. Despite having previously been deported twice, he was released without bail after a Middlesex Superior Court ruling.
Other cases reported by the media include high-profile criminals like Jose Fernando-Perez, a Guatemalan national charged with multiple counts of child rape, who was released on a $7,500 bail prior to being arrested by ICE several months later.
Patricia Hyde, acting field office director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, stated that criminals like Fernando-Perez are exactly who ICE aims to target with their ‘worst first’ policy. ‘Horrific crimes against minors are unacceptable,’ she emphasized.
Homan further underscored the effectiveness of recent operations, revealing that ICE arrested 370 illegal immigrants in the Boston area during a coordinated federal agency initiative. He attributed the high number of arrests to the refusal of local leaders to cooperate with ICE.
‘These officers and agents made the neighborhoods of Boston and Massachusetts much safer,’ Homan noted. ‘Releasing public safety threats back into the community puts the public at great risk.’
Homan has made clear his resolve to continue targeting sanctuary cities, stating during a recent appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), ‘I’m coming to Boston, and I’m bringing hell with me.’
Logan Trupiano, a representative from the Massachusetts Republican Party, echoed Homan’s sentiments, criticizing the local leaders for prioritizing emotion over public safety. ‘It’s absolutely egregious to release criminals back into the community,’ Trupiano remarked. ‘There’s no decent argument against deporting criminal illegals.’
As debates around immigration continue, the Trump administration remains steadfast in its commitment to prioritize public safety over sanctuary policies. Homan concluded, ‘President Trump’s all-of-government effort to arrest and remove the worst offenders is making our communities safer.’
