Allegations of sexual assault have surfaced against renowned artist Kehinde Wiley, as British-born Ghanaian artist Joseph Awuah-Darko accuses him of misconduct. The claims were laid out in a detailed Instagram post by Awuah-Darko, recounting incidents that allegedly occurred during a dinner honoring Wiley by Ghana’s Creative Art Council at the Noldor Artist Residency.

According to Awuah-Darko, the first assault took place when Wiley allegedly inappropriately groped him while directing him to a restroom. A second, more severe incident is reported to have occurred later, with Awuah-Darko claiming that a consensual encounter turned violent when it moved to a bedroom. Awuah-Darko described feeling pressured by Wiley, despite expressing his reluctance to continue any further.

In response to the accusations, Kehinde Wiley issued a statement on his personal platform refuting the claims. He denied the allegations, asserting that they are false and do not align with the truth. Wiley expressed empathy for all victims of sexual abuse in his statement.

Joseph Awuah-Darko, a multifaceted artist, musician, and curator known for his collection of contemporary African and diaspora art, stands behind his allegations. However, no criminal charges have been filed against Kehinde Wiley at present. Wiley’s legal team has taken action by sending Awuah-Darko a cease and desist letter, demanding the removal of the Instagram post and a halt to further statements against Wiley.
