Controversy Surrounds Tirupati Laddus Over Alleged Use of Non-vegetarian Ingredients
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has stirred controversy by claiming that lab reports indicate the presence of “beef tallow, fish oil,” and other substandard ingredients in the renowned Tirupati laddus. These laddus, a consecrated sweet offered to devotees at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, are revered across the world.
The controversial lab reports also alleged the presence of “lard,” which pertains to pig fat, in the laddus. These samples were reportedly sent to a livestock laboratory based in Gujarat, with the sample receipt dated July 9, 2024, and the lab report dated July 16, 2024.
TDP spokesperson Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy stated, “The lab reports confirm substances used in the preparation of ghee supplied to Tirumala,” mentioning that the S value is only 19.7. He argued, “This is an affront to Hindu religion,” highlighting the significance of these ingredients to the devotees who consume the laddus thrice daily.
These allegations emerged following a statement by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on September 18, accusing the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government, led by Jagan Reddy, of using substandard ingredients and animal fat in preparing the Tirupati laddus. However, the YSRCP has denied these charges.
To date, there is no confirmation from the Andhra Pradesh government or the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple, regarding these claims. This lack of confirmation has left the devotees and the public awaiting further clarifications.
