Cosat Celebrates Exceptional Matric Results In Khayelitsha

COSAT (Centre of Science and Technology) in Khayelitsha, Western Cape, has achieved outstanding matric results for the year 2023. The school’s overall pass rate increased significantly to 99.0%, marking a remarkable improvement from 92.5% in the previous year.

Among the candidates, an impressive 61.2% achieved a bachelor’s pass, indicating a high-quality matriculation. All learners at COSAT enroll for Mathematics and Physical Sciences, which are essential subjects for academic excellence. The school achieved a Mathematics pass rate of 99.0% and a Physical Sciences pass rate of 91.3%.

A total of 107 distinctions were attained by COSAT students, including 10 distinctions in Mathematics, with three candidates scoring over 90%, and four distinctions in Physical Sciences.

Principal Tiro Motaung attributed the school’s success to a culture of hard work, long school days ending at 16:00 from Tuesday to Thursday, Saturday school for extra support, regular progress reports, and a wide range of extracurricular activities such as Robotics, STEM club, debate, music, and sports. The school firmly upholds its motto, ‘No excuses, just success’.

The Metro East Education District, where COSAT is located, has also achieved remarkable results. In the last year, the district surpassed expectations by breaking through the 80% barrier, with a pass rate of 83.52%, an increase of 5.23 percentage points. The district’s bachelor’s pass rate rose by 2.46 percentage points to 41.87%, benefiting learners in economically disadvantaged communities.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) congratulated the Metro East district and all the schools in the region for their accomplishments. With this achievement, the district joins four other areas in the Western Cape with pass rates exceeding 80%.

The education inequality gap is gradually closing across quintiles 1, 2, and 3 schools in the Western Cape. Quintile 1 schools, despite facing challenging socio-economic conditions, experienced a pass rate increase for the second consecutive year, reaching 72.0%. Notably, they also achieved a bachelors pass rate of 27.7%.

Quintile 2 schools demonstrated exceptional results, with a substantial 7.2 percentage point increase in pass rates, reaching 77.5%. They also recorded a 30.5% bachelors pass rate, enabling learners to pursue higher education.

Similarly, Quintile 3 schools achieved significant progress with a 78.0% pass rate and a 32.2% bachelors pass rate. These outcomes emphasize the potential for success in lower quintile schools when appropriate support and resources are provided.

The WCED encourages candidates who did not achieve their desired results to consider options such as applying for re-marks or re-checks, or to write the exams in June. Support and counselling services are available for students who may be disappointed with their results.

As the class of 2023 receives their individual matric results, they are urged to continue their educational journeys and not give up on completing Grade 12. The WCED acknowledges the hard work and dedication of all learners and congratulates them on their achievements.

Candidates can collect their results from their respective schools or access them on the WCED website. Media inquiries regarding this announcement should be directed to Kerry Mauchline, the spokesperson for Minister David Maynier at the Western Cape Ministry of Education.
