Countdown Begins for Tampa Bay’s Most Powerful Politicians

TAMPA, Florida — The countdown has begun for the 12th annual list of Tampa Bay’s Most Powerful Politicians. Today, the first block of politicians ranked from No. 25 to No. 21 was revealed. The final reveal of the top-ranked politician will take place on Friday.
The Florida Legislature recently wrapped up its 104-day session, and lawmakers are now finalizing the state budget, which is projected to reach approximately $115 billion. A final vote is expected on the budget as the 72-hour cooling-off period ends around 7 p.m. this Friday. This timing is crucial with the current fiscal year set to close soon.
Governor Ron DeSantis will review the budget, which is about $500 million less than his initial proposal for this session and $1.5 billion lower than the previous year’s approved spending. The budget includes significant allocations, such as nearly $1.3 billion in tax cuts, funding for emergency preparedness and response, and adjustments in nursing home Medicaid rates.
Following the budget’s approval, DeSantis will enter a rapid veto period. Lawmakers previously enjoyed a lengthy 44-day negotiation period; however, the governor’s prompt decision-making is critical to avoid a potential state government shutdown.
Senate President Ben Albritton commented on the budget, emphasizing the importance of debt reduction for environmental and state obligations. “Paying off all of our environmental debt this year is a huge step in the right direction,” he stated.
In sports news, Miami will host its first game in the FIFA Club World Cup tonight at 6 p.m. ET, featuring Boca Juniors against Benfica. This tournament has been revamped to include 32 teams and is the first held in the United States. The previous editions occurred in Saudi Arabia and other international locations, showcasing the best clubs across footballing continents.
