Creators of Rick and Morty Discuss New Season’s Challenges and Innovations

BURBANK, California — Dan Harmon and Scott Marder, creators of the animated series “Rick and Morty,” shared insights about the show’s upcoming eighth season, set to premiere on May 25, 2025. As the series enters its next chapter, the duo discussed the creative processes behind writing new episodes and the evolution of beloved characters.
The new season features a Matrix-inspired storyline and explores themes ranging from body horror to the experiences of fan-favorite characters. Harmon noted the show’s capacity for chaotic creativity remains strong, evoking the same excitement as the series’ original run over a decade ago.
“When we start writing a new episode, we don’t begin with ‘What’s the canon we owe?’” Marder explained. He emphasized that they prefer to spark ideas based on enthusiasm rather than rules, allowing for innovation in their storytelling.
“Each writer comes in with their own ideas, and you can see their energy and excitement,” he added. Harmon highlighted a contrast between traditional episodic television and the evolving narratives of modern shows. He stated that while “Rick and Morty” holds episodic qualities, it also intertwines serialized storytelling that engages audiences over time.
Harmon mentioned challenges surrounding character development, particularly with Rick, who balances his nihilistic past with new emotional complexities. Marder chimed in, mentioning a newfound focus on character arcs, including a split Beth and Summer taking on more significant roles.
The creators also hinted at long-awaited concepts making their way into the narrative. Harmon acknowledged that certain ideas have remained on the creative back burner, waiting for the right moment to materialize in the series.
“We have a shoebox of ideas that couldn’t be done before, but we keep passing them around until they find a home,” he said. Both Harmon and Marder expressed confidence that the new season will challenge boundaries while retaining the unique humor that fans expect.
The eighth season promises various plotlines that continue to explore the dynamics of family and emotional engagement among characters, reaffirming the series’ ability to adapt and surprise.
