Cyber Fraud: Cyber Criminals Duped Individual Of ₹1.61 Lakh Posing As Credit Card Staff

A case of cyber fraud totaling ₹1.61 lakh has come to light in Sector-52, Chandigarh, where Beiju Thakur fell victim to an online scam. Thakur, originally from Bihar, had obtained a credit card from SBI Bank in December 2023. Gradually, he noticed unusual deductions from his credit card.

On December 11, Thakur received a call from an individual claiming to be a credit card company employee. The caller stated that there were excessive charges on his credit card, advising him to deactivate it. Subsequently, an OTP was sent to Thakur’s mobile, which he shared with the caller.

About 5-6 days later, Thakur received an email detailing two unauthorized transactions from his credit card amounting to ₹62,646 and ₹99,274, respectively. It was at this point that Thakur realized he had been a victim of fraud.

The Cyber Fraud Cell is actively investigating the case, aiming to track down the perpetrators who posed as credit card staff to dupe Thakur. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution when sharing sensitive financial information.
