Dallas Winter Storm Snow Emergency Shelters

DALLAS, Texas – As freezing temperatures and a winter storm sweep across North Texas, the City of Dallas has activated emergency measures to ensure the safety of its residents. The Office of Homeless Solutions (OHS) opened temporary inclement weather shelters at Fair Park on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, to provide refuge for vulnerable populations. The shelters will remain operational through the weekend, with volunteers assisting in managing the influx of guests.

Meteorologists predict that the region will experience its coldest temperatures of the season, with some areas north of Dallas receiving up to 11 inches of snow. Evan Andrews, a meteorologist with FOX 4, noted that while some areas saw significant snowfall, others received less than expected. “Some of you got that heavier precipitation on Thursday. Others were waiting for some overnight, and the precip overnight really never got going,” Andrews said.

The City of Dallas has also announced closures and modified schedules for several departments, including Dallas Animal Services, Dallas Public Libraries, and recreation centers. Sanitation services have been suspended due to hazardous road conditions, with collections expected to resume once conditions improve. Residents are advised to monitor updates for the latest information.

Transportation and Public Works (TPW) crews are treating major roads with brine and sand to prevent ice buildup. Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) is coordinating with local nonprofits to transport unsheltered individuals to warming centers. “If you see someone in need of shelter, please call 911,” a DFR spokesperson said.

Volunteers are urgently needed to support shelter operations. Those interested can sign up through the OHS website. The city has also encouraged residents to sign up for DallasAlert, a free emergency notification system, to stay informed about weather updates and safety advisories.

As the storm continues, officials urge residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their pets. Dallas Animal Services reminds pet owners that if it’s too cold for them, it’s too cold for their pets. Residents are encouraged to report animals left outdoors without proper shelter by calling 311.
