A dam failure in Nashville, Illinois, has led to a mandatory evacuation order for residents in the area. The Washington County Emergency Management Agency reported that a main dam and a secondary one collapsed due to heavy rains, prompting concerns of flash flooding.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning following more than six inches of rainfall that inundated the region. The Nashville Reservoir breached its banks, causing widespread flooding and dangerous conditions for residents.

According to officials, the failure of the dams posed a significant risk to approximately 200 homes in the vicinity. Emergency responders were deployed to assist with evacuations, and the Red Cross established a shelter at a community center in Nashville for those displaced by the flooding.

SSM Health, a local healthcare provider, announced the closure of its Nashville Clinic until further notice due to the severe weather conditions. Interstate 64 was also closed in certain areas as floodwaters spilled over onto the roadway, creating hazardous driving conditions.

The Jefferson County region in Illinois was similarly affected by flash flooding, with several roads rendered impassable. Local authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to seek higher ground if faced with rising waters.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office set up a hotline for residents in need of assistance and recommended calling 911 in case of emergencies. As the situation continues to unfold, community members are advised to stay informed through official channels and follow safety guidelines provided by local authorities.
