On a recent episode of BBC Breakfast, Danny O'Donoghue, the frontman of the Irish band The Script, shared a poignant tribute to his late bandmate Mark Sheehan. Speaking during the morning program, the 43-year-old musician discussed both the band’s upcoming world tour and their newest album, ‘Satellites‘, marking their first release since 2019. However, it was the emotional reflection on the tragic passing of Sheehan that captured the audience’s attention.

Sheehan, who was a founding member, guitarist, and longtime friend of O’Donoghue, sadly passed away in 2023 at the age of 46. Reflecting on the devastating loss, O’Donoghue recounted: “Last year was devastating; we lost my best friend and guitarist in the band, Mark. It took us a little while to come out from underneath that.” He candidly confessed to struggling with grief through increased consumption of alcohol and other substances, which led to his decision to abstain from alcohol, cigarettes, and caffeine in pursuit of a healthier lifestyle.

O’Donoghue elaborated on the perpetual nature of grief, sharing: “You never really get rid of grief, it’s always there, you just learn to grow around it.” He explained how the process of creating their new album offered a therapeutic outlet, helping the band to find a sense of direction amid their sorrow.

Regarding their latest work and tour, O’Donoghue remarked, “Such a shame he’s not here to see it, I know he’s looking down and he’s happy.” He disclosed that the new album is dedicated to Sheehan, celebrating his impact and legacy. Reflecting on his bandmate’s lasting influence, he added, “People remember him in such a way and he touched so many people’s lives around the world. It’s beautiful.”

The Script, renowned for their hits and dynamic performances, was formed in 2001 by Sheehan alongside O’Donoghue and drummer Glen Power. The announcement of Sheehan’s death last year came as a shock to fans, with the band releasing a heartfelt statement: “Much loved husband, father, brother, bandmate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness.” The band requested privacy for Sheehan’s family and friends during the tragic period.
