N2 Mandeni Toll Plaza Crash Scene

Officials have reported that a tragic accident occurred on Friday morning near the Mandeni Toll Plaza on the N2 highway, resulting in the deaths of a man and seven schoolchildren. The collision involved a car, reportedly transporting the children, and a truck.

According to Ndabezinhle Sibiya, a spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department, initial findings suggest that the car lost control and crossed over into the opposite lane. “The car went over to the other lane and collided with the truck, causing it to veer off the road and overturn,” Sibiya stated. He added, “Another dark cloud is hanging over KwaZulu-Natal after yet another horrific accident on our roads.”

The incident has left the truck driver critically injured. Emergency services and teams from the Road Traffic Inspectorate are currently engaged in addressing the aftermath of the crash. Sindi Msimang of the Road Traffic Inspectorate mentioned that clean-up operations are ongoing. “We have started cleaning up and recovering the bodies, but the road is still closed – both bounds,” she reported. She further advised motorists to take an alternative route, recommending the R102 instead of the currently blocked N2.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation as authorities work to clear the site and gather more details. Meanwhile, the community is urged to exercise caution and adhere to the recommended detours until the N2 is reopened.
