Deadly Tornado Strikes Westmoreland, Kansas, Leaving Destruction in its Wake
Residents of Westmoreland, Kansas, were left reeling after a deadly tornado tore through the town in Pottawatomie County, claiming at least one life and causing extensive damage to homes and buildings.
The terrifying event was captured on video by local resident Buster Schmitz, who filmed the massive funnel cloud swirling above him as debris filled the air in the small town.
The tornado, a tragic consequence of severe weather patterns moving across the Plains, struck Westmoreland with devastating force, leaving nearly two dozen homes in ruins and injuring several individuals.
Buster Schmitz, who was initially at a convenience store when the storm hit, recounted hearing the tornado sirens blaring and immediately realizing the imminent danger as he witnessed the funnel cloud directly overhead, sucking up dirt and debris into its powerful vortex.
Following the destructive tornado’s path through Westmoreland, County officials reported significant damage to residential properties, with approximately 13 homes also suffering varying degrees of destruction from the natural disaster.
Pottawatomie County Sheriff Shane Jager issued a curfew in response to the storm’s aftermath, emphasizing the need for safety and caution as cleanup efforts commenced and the community began the arduous process of rebuilding in the wake of the catastrophic tornado.
