WASHINGTON – Deb Haaland, who served as President Joe Biden’s interior secretary for four years, announced her candidacy for governor of New Mexico on February 11, 2025. This move positions Haaland as the first declared candidate to succeed Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is term-limited out of office in 2026.
In a video announcing her bid, Haaland, 64, shared her life experiences and the challenges she has overcome. “In my life, I’ve learned that nothing comes easy,” she stated. “Moving around a lot as a kid in a military family. Raising my child on my own. Achieving 35 years of sobriety. But here in New Mexico, struggle makes you fierce.”
Haaland continued, emphasizing the current challenges facing the state: “The problems we face now are bigger than ever, and we must be fierce to solve them. That’s why I am running for governor of the great state of New Mexico.”
A member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, Haaland made history as Biden’s interior secretary by becoming the first Native American to serve in a presidential Cabinet position. If elected governor, she would also make history as the first Native American woman to hold such a title in the United States.
Her tenure as interior secretary was marked by significant actions aimed at protecting public lands and addressing historical grievances faced by Native American communities. Observers note that her candidacy could greatly impact ongoing discussions about diversity and representation in politics.
Recently, when asked about her plans following the Biden administration, Haaland remained noncommittal but reiterated her commitment to advocacy: “Whatever it is, I have not changed. There are things that always need attention, right? I was an advocate and an activist long before I ever came to Washington, D.C. I’ll likely continue to advocate for all of the things that I care about,” she remarked.
As a prominent figure in national politics, Haaland’s entry into the gubernatorial race is seen as strategically important for New Mexico, especially following recent state-level Democratic electoral challenges. Her campaign is expected to focus on her deep connections to New Mexico and her dedication to serving its diverse communities.
If successful, Haaland’s election would not only break new ground in U.S. politics but also signal a shift towards greater representation of Native voices in leadership roles. As the political landscape evolves, her candidacy is likely to attract widespread attention both locally and nationally.
