Wisconsin Capitol Protests Against Republican Redistricting

MADISON, Wis. — In light of ongoing debates over gerrymandering, Millers Falls resident Mike Naughton has voiced his opposition to a recent proposal suggesting that Democrats should counter Republican tactics with their own form of map manipulation.

Naughton’s remarks come after Timothy Flynn’s opinion piece in the Greenfield Recorder on March 26, where he encouraged Democrats to “fight fire with fire” regarding Republican redistricting strategies. Naughton believes that responding with similar tactics undermines democratic principles.

In his letter published April 1, Naughton argued, “You don’t fight anti-democratic forces by becoming more anti-democratic.” He emphasized that while the political divide between Democrats and Republicans is concerning, the greater issue lies in disengagement from the electoral process, with many voters feeling disconnected from both parties.

Highlighting the long-term ramifications of adopting a gerrymandering approach, Naughton warned that any immediate gains could alienate even more voters, effectively disengaging them from the system entirely.

“A better strategy would be for Democrats to double down on democracy and fair play,” Naughton wrote. He urged party members to hold all officials accountable, regardless of their political affiliation, when they attempt to manipulate electoral rules.

Naughton also championed a collaborative approach to governance, stating, “Reasonable people disagree about what government should do and how much it should cost, so stop acting like there’s only one answer.” He highlighted the importance of seeking broad-based support for legislative proposals rather than relying on narrow majorities.

Concluding his letter, Naughton stated, “I think that we can make it work if we try, and I think it’s our country’s only hope.” His perspective adds to the ongoing discussion about the need for fair electoral practices as the 2024 elections approach.
