Denis Coderre’s Pilgrimage to Compostela Sparks Speculation About Potential Political Comeback
Denis Coderre, the former mayor of Montréal and potential candidate for the leadership of the Parti libéral du Québec, has embarked on a pilgrimage to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle in Spain, raising speculation about his political intentions.
Coderre’s journey, which aims to raise funds for the Garage à musique, a specialized center for social pediatrics in Montréal, comes a year after he suffered a stroke on April 11, 2023, demonstrating remarkable resilience.
While documenting his pilgrimage through daily Facebook posts and radio appearances, Coderre has also used the opportunity to hint at a potential political comeback, with his return slated for May 31.
Despite the spiritual significance of his journey, Coderre has seized the chance to inject some politics into his pilgrimage, even suggesting a campaign slogan, ‘Avec Coderre, ça va marcher!’ and delivering a political message during Patriots' Day celebrations.
His potential candidacy for the leadership of the Parti libéral du Québec has stirred intrigue within the party, especially as few contenders have emerged to succeed Dominique Anglade.
With names like Antoine Tardif, Karl Blackburn, Charles Milliard, and Frédéric Beauchemin circulating as possible contenders in the leadership race set for June 14, 2025, the party is gearing up for a much-needed rejuvenation.
