Arizona Diamondbacks Playoff Hopes

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Arizona Diamondbacks are in a tough position as they enter the final weekend of the 2025 MLB season. Coming off a debilitating 8-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, their chances for a playoff spot hang by a thread with just three games remaining.

After previously announcing plans to switch to a four-man rotation, the team opted for a ‘bullpen game’ that did not go as intended. Starting pitcher Jalen Beeks began strong but faltered in the second inning, surrendering a home run to Dodgers star Freddie Freeman. The decision to bring in Nabil Crismatt as a bulk reliever backfired, as he was hit hard by batting power from the Dodgers lineup.

Manager Torey Lovullo expressed disappointment, explaining that the team had no margin for error. “We backed ourselves into a corner,” Lovullo said. The aftermath of this loss left the Diamondbacks two games behind the New York Mets for the final National League Wild Card spot.

Lovullo, who also chose to bench ace Zac Gallen for an extra day of rest, took a big risk that may haunt the team. Notably, Gallen has recently struggled with illness but has been a key asset with excellent performance in past starts. “We need to win all three games,” Lovullo said, emphasizing the urgency of the upcoming match against the San Diego Padres.

The Diamondbacks’ playoff chances are diminished, but they still have a fighting chance. Players like rookie sensation Corbin Carroll and veteran Eduardo Rodriguez remain optimistic. Carroll noted, “We’ve got what it takes if we get in.” Rodriguez echoed similar sentiments, recalling the 2021 Red Sox, who clinched on the last day and continued to excel.

As it stands, Arizona’s next few games are crucial. A sweep against the Padres is essential to keep their postseason dream alive. With all cards on the table, the Diamondbacks aim to rise against the odds and finish strong.
