Disgraced Former Congressman George Santos Announces Run For Congress Against Representative Nick Lalota

George Santos, the former congressman expelled from the House of Representatives late last year, has officially declared his candidacy to challenge Rep. Nick LaLota for the Republican nomination in the First Congressional District. Santos made the announcement during President Joe Biden‘s recent State of the Union address, highlighting his intention to re-enter the political arena.

Santos submitted his official statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission, solidifying his bid for a comeback in the realm of politics.

Following his election in 2022 to represent NY-03, Santos faced expulsion from the House in December due to allegations of severe misconduct. The House Ethics Committee found substantial evidence that Santos had violated federal laws, misappropriated campaign funds, and engaged in unethical practices.

Rep. Nick LaLota, a fellow Republican and current representative of the NY-01 district, was one of the first congressmen to call for Santos’s resignation. LaLota not only endorsed the motion to expel Santos but also cosponsored the resolution to remove him from office.

In his social media post targeting LaLota, Santos labeled the representative as a ‘RINO’ (Republican in Name Only) and criticized his motives, accusing him of jeopardizing the country’s future for personal gains.

LaLota swiftly responded to Santos’s challenge, asserting his commitment to maintaining high ethical standards in Congress. He reiterated his past actions against Santos, emphasizing his resolve to hold the former congressman accountable.

The primary elections in New York are set for June 25, where Santos and LaLota will face off for the Republican nomination.

Currently facing 23 federal felony charges, Santos has pleaded not guilty to all counts. His criminal trial is scheduled for September, relating to various allegations including wire fraud and false statements.

Despite the controversy surrounding Santos, his prior election victory in NY-03 ended with the revelation of numerous discrepancies in his background and campaign disclosures. The New York Times extensively reported on these fabrications, painting a picture of a candidate who misled voters about his personal and professional life.

The upcoming primary battle between Santos and LaLota is poised to be a high-stakes political confrontation, as both candidates vie for a chance to represent their district in Congress.
