Disney Springs History And Evolution

Lake Buena Vista, Florida – Disney Springs is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, marking a decade since it transformed from the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village into a vibrant retail, dining, and entertainment hub.

Originally opened in 1975 with 37 dining and retail venues, Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village was designed to complement the nearby Walt Disney World residences. Iconic establishments like Arribas Brothers, known for its exquisite glass and crystal creations, still operate today.

In the years following its inception, the complex evolved into Walt Disney World Village, attracting visitors from across the globe. One of the standout additions was the Empress Lilly, a riverboat fine dining experience named after Walt Disney’s wife.

In 1989, the shopping village was rebranded as Disney Village Marketplace, introducing nostalgic brands and the popular Pleasure Island, a nightlife destination for adults. These expansions set the stage for significant growth.

In 1997, the areas of Disney Village Marketplace and Pleasure Island merged to create Downtown Disney. This expansion included West Side, showcasing attractions like La Nouba by Cirque du Soleil and DisneyQuest, transforming the district from a simple shopping spot to a comprehensive entertainment complex.

Today, Disney Springs features over 150 unique shops, eateries, and entertainment experiences across 1,210 acres. The complex employs thousands, contributing significantly to the local economy. Notable businesses include Joffrey’s Coffee and Gideon’s Bakehouse, both rooted in Florida.

Historical details are woven throughout Disney Springs; for example, the Morimoto Asia restaurant is situated in a building that once held the Springs Bottling Company, with its interior showcasing remnants of its past.

As Disney Springs embarks on its next chapter, the community anticipates continued growth while honoring the high standards and legacy Disney is renowned for.
