Dodgers Lack Healthy Catchers as Playoffs Approach

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles Dodgers are in a tight spot as both of their catchers are sidelined with injuries. All-Star catcher Will Smith was placed on the 15-day injured list on September 13, retroactive to September 10, after being hit in the hand by a foul ball on September 3.
Rookie catcher Dalton Rushing also recently landed on the injured list due to a right shin contusion. The timing could not be worse, as the Dodgers prepare for the postseason. Coach Dave Roberts is concerned about Smith’s progress, noting that he won’t face live pitching until next week, aiming to prepare him adequately for the playoffs.
“There might be some one-handed swings. I don’t know if he’s going to be using his top hand,” Roberts commented. “As far as the throwing, I’m not sure about that. It’s kind of a day-to-day thing.”
In Smith’s absence, Ben Rortvedt has stepped up, batting .286 with two home runs in just 28 at-bats this month. Although Rortvedt has been reliable, the team would prefer to have Smith back for the playoffs.
The earliest Smith could return is this Saturday, against the San Francisco Giants, but Roberts suggested this is unlikely. “I think as the days get closer it’s going to be contingent on what he’s doing,” Roberts explained. “If he’s taking live batting practice two days out from potential activation, then it’s more plausible.”
Smith’s recent performance has been inconsistent, hitting .210 with a .726 OPS over his last 20 games. Despite this, he remains the team’s best option behind the plate. His ability to perform through pain may be essential as the regular season nears its end.
As the Dodgers navigate this injury crisis, all eyes will be on Smith’s recovery. The team can only hope he can return to the lineup soon, with playoffs just around the corner.
