Los Angeles Dodgers Magic Number September 2025

LOS ANGELES, California — The Los Angeles Dodgers are inching closer to clinching the National League West following their 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants Thursday. This win, combined with the San Diego Padres‘ loss to the New York Mets earlier that day, has lowered the Dodgers’ magic number to six games.

Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who has spent all 18 seasons of his Major League Baseball career with the team, announced his retirement prior to the game. Kershaw leaves behind a legacy of numerous awards and accolades.

The win against the Giants keeps the Dodgers in a strong position to secure the division title. They currently lead the NL West by 2.5 games. If the Dodgers win their next game, they can further reduce their magic number to five.

Despite their recent successes, the Dodgers face challenges with their bullpen. Manager Dave Roberts expressed concerns about the bullpen’s performance as they near the postseason. “Before the results, it has to be confidence,” Roberts said. “You can’t chase a zero in an inning until you execute the first pitch.”

The Dodgers bullpen has struggled with a 4.29 ERA, ranking among the worst in the league. Identifying which relievers will step up in crucial moments remains a priority for Roberts as he prepares for October.

On a brighter note, the Dodgers’ starting rotation has been exceptional, with Blake Snell recently tossing seven scoreless innings against the Philadelphia Phillies, featuring 12 strikeouts. This performance was crucial for the Dodgers, helping them avoid a sweep at the hands of the Phillies and boosting their chances for the upcoming playoffs.

As the Dodgers continue their push for the NL West title, they’re hopeful their bullpen will improve, allowing them to make a deeper run in October. With only nine games remaining in the regular season, every win is vital.

The Dodgers will look to continue their winning ways this weekend against the Giants in a four-game series.
