Dolly Parton Dollywood 40th Season Celebration

PIGEON FORGE, Tennessee — Nearly two weeks after the passing of her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, Dolly Parton made a poignant public appearance at the launch of the 40th season of her theme park, Dollywood, on March 14. The legendary country singer, clad in a tasseled pink dress, performed and expressed her gratitude for the community’s support during this challenging time.

Parton, who has built a legacy at Dollywood since its inception in 1961, addressed the audience, saying, “Thank you to our guests and the community for the support they’ve given to my Dollywood for 40 years. It’s hard to believe it has been that long, but it never would have lasted if it hadn’t been for you—our guests.”

Only days after Dean’s death on March 3 at the age of 82, Parton took to social media to thank fans for their condolences. In a heartfelt post on March 6, she wrote, “Thank you for all the messages, cards, and flowers that you’ve sent to pay your respects for the loss of my beloved husband Carl. He is in God’s arms now and I am okay with that.”

Parton, 79, also shared a deeply sentimental message reflecting on their nearly 60-year marriage. “Carl and I fell in love when I was 18 and he was 23, and like all great love stories, they never end,” she wrote. “They live in memory and in song, and I dedicate this to him.” In remembrance, she performed a new song titled “If You Hadn’t Been There,” which she penned shortly after his passing.

“I wouldn’t be here / If you hadn’t been there,” Parton sang. “You made me dream / More than I dared / And I wouldn’t be here / If you hadn’t been there.” Her tribute resonated with many in attendance and showcased the depth of their relationship.

As Parton navigates through her grief, she remains an enduring figure at Dollywood, where she has created countless memories with her late husband. Despite Dean’s preference for privacy away from the spotlight, his influence in Parton’s world was significant. “He always wanted to enjoy the park in his own way, often discreetly taking notes on improvements,” she recalled.

Parton lightheartedly shared anecdotes about Dean’s visits to Dollywood, including his habit of purchasing his own ticket rather than riding on her fame. “He didn’t want somebody giving him a ticket ‘cause he was Dolly’s husband,” she said with a laugh. “Everybody thinks that’s the funniest thing.”

Throughout their marriage, Parton and Dean inspired each other, creating a life filled with love and passion. Now, as she embraces this new chapter without him, she affirmed, “I’ll keep him always close.”

Parton’s appearance at Dollywood exemplified her resilience and commitment to her fans. “I need to laugh. I need some fun, so I’m probably gonna be stupid. I’ve been crying enough the last week or two,” she admitted to the crowd, highlighting her unwavering spirit amidst the sorrow.

The 40th season celebration not only marked a significant milestone for Dollywood but also served as a testament to Parton’s strength and dedication to her life’s work, a legacy she shares with her late husband.
