MIAMI, FL — The Miami Dolphins began trimming their roster on Monday as they prepare to meet the NFL’s 53-man limit by Tuesday afternoon. Veteran cornerback Mike Hilton and running back Mike Boone were among the notable cuts confirmed by their agents.

Hilton, 31, was brought in during training camp to fill the void left by Kader Kohou, who suffered a season-ending knee injury. Initially expected to be a key player in the Dolphins’ secondary, Hilton struggled throughout the preseason. Rookie fifth-round pick Jason Marshall Jr. outperformed him and emerged as the team’s nickel cornerback.

“We wanted to make sure we saw the younger guys at certain positions,” said Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver regarding Hilton’s limited playing time during the preseason.

In addition to Hilton, Miami released Boone and fellow running back Aaron Shampklin. The release of Boone is particularly surprising, considering he had a strong performance during the preseason, including a touchdown in the final exhibition game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

With running backs De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright nursing injuries, rookie Ollie Gordon is currently the only healthy running back on the roster. The Dolphins may look to add another running back from the waiver wire, given their injury concerns.

Miami also parted ways with offensive tackle Jackson Carman and other players, bringing the roster down to 84. The Dolphins still have 31 moves remaining to reach their final roster.

The team’s cuts come ahead of the deadline for all NFL teams to finalize their rosters. Coach Mike McDaniel expressed the difficulty of the day, stating, “One of my least favorite days that exist.”

With many challenging decisions still ahead, the Dolphins are working to solidify their lineup as the start of the regular season approaches.
