Dominique Pelicot Trial Avignon Courthouse

Dominique Pelicot, a 71-year-old man, confessed in a French court to drugging his wife and facilitating her abuse by multiple men over a period of nearly ten years. This admission was made during his testimony in a trial that has captured national attention since its commencement on September 2.

In his statement, Mr. Pelicot acknowledged his role, declaring, “I am a rapist like the others in this room.” He referred to his 50 co-defendants, most of whom deny the rape charges, asserting instead that they only engaged in sexual acts. While addressing the court, Mr. Pelicot expressed remorse by stating, “She did not deserve this.”

Gisèle Pelicot, Dominique’s ex-wife and the trial’s key victim, also addressed the court, saying, “For 50 years, I lived with a man who I would have never imagined capable of this. I trusted him completely.” She decided to waive her right to anonymity for the trial, hoping to redirect the “shame” onto the accused. Her courage has garnered her public support, symbolizing the struggle against sexual violence in France.

During the trial, Mr. Pelicot offered a glimpse into his past, recounting traumatic childhood experiences, including being abused. He attributed part of his actions to this trauma and expressed regret for his actions, stating his love for his wife, “I loved her well for 40 years and badly for 10.” He attempted to blame his behavior on an “addiction,” which he described as growing over time.

The court also heard about the disturbing discovery of thousands of videos documenting the abuses, which were critical in identifying the numerous men involved. These videos were purportedly used by Mr. Pelicot as “insurance.” His defense was targeted at discrediting claims from co-defendants who argued they were unaware of the crimes’ non-consensual nature.

Mr. Pelicot also faced accusations related to his daughter, Caroline, after disturbing images of her were uncovered. He refuted these claims and denied any misconduct with his grandchildren.

Defense lawyer Béatrice Zavarro conveyed that Mr. Pelicot was “sharing his truth” and was determined to continue with the confessions. She emphasized the need for the trial to unfold fully to uncover all details concerning Mr. Pelicot and those involved.

If convicted, the defendants, aged between 26 and 74, face potential sentences of up to 20 years. The trial, taking place in Avignon, is expected to persist until December.
