Donavan McKinney Launches Congressional Bid Against Shri Thanedar

Detroit, Michigan – State Rep. Donavan McKinney declared his candidacy for the U.S. Congress on April 28, positioning himself as a challenger to incumbent U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar in the upcoming Democratic primary for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District.
McKinney, a 32-year-old Democrat, first joined the Michigan House of Representatives in 2022. He has rapidly gained traction, citing his working-class roots and commitment to representing everyday citizens. In his campaign announcement, McKinney stated, “I’m not running for Congress because I’m a millionaire or a billionaire. I’m running because I’m not.”
The 13th District, which includes parts of Detroit and Downriver, is considered a Democratic stronghold. McKinney argues that his opponent, Thanedar, a multimillionaire, does not adequately represent the needs of the district’s residents. “Our community deserves to have someone fighting back against the Trump-Musk administration who knows our struggles,” he noted.
Thanedar, elected to Congress in 2022, emphasized his achievements during his tenure, including resolving over 3,000 constituent cases and recovering $3 million for constituents. However, he has faced criticism from opponents who claim he has failed to adequately serve his constituents.
In announcing his campaign, McKinney highlighted his upbringing in poverty within Detroit, emphasizing his commitment to addressing pressing local issues such as environmental racism, housing insecurity, and poor public transit. Throughout his tenure in the Michigan House, he has worked on funding community recreation centers and initiatives aimed at replacing lead pipes.
McKinney is backed by the Justice Democrats, marking him as their first endorsed candidate for the upcoming cycle, signaling a renewed push for progressive representation within the party. In response to changes in his district’s demographics and ongoing discussions within the Congressional Black Caucus, he underscored his goal to restore Black representation in Congress.
As the campaign unfolds, McKinney faces significant challenges from Thanedar, who has a proven track record of fundraising through his personal wealth. Analysts suggest McKinney’s ability to unify support among various factions of the district will be crucial.
“I’m running for Congress so that you will never have to wonder if your Congressman is fighting for you in Washington. You know I will be,” McKinney stated, echoing the urgency he feels towards serving his constituents.
