Donner Pass Winter Storm Snow

Donner Pass in California is preparing for another significant winter storm, following recent heavy snowfall in the region. As of the latest forecast, the area is expected to experience cold temperatures and accumulating snow from Thursday night into Friday.

The current weather conditions have already led to substantial snow totals, with the upper elevations receiving several inches of snow. This has resulted in chain control measures being implemented on major highways. For example, I-80 eastbound is under R2 chain restrictions from Cosco Grove to the Donner Lake Interchange, and westbound from the Donner Lake Interchange to Eagle Lakes.

Travelers are advised to plan ahead and check the latest road conditions and weather updates. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and CalTrans are providing regular updates on road conditions, including chain requirements and any traffic restrictions. High winds, with ridgetop gusts up to 90-100 mph, are also expected, which could impact travel and road clearing operations.

In addition to the weather concerns, local residents and visitors are encouraged to prepare their homes for the winter conditions. This includes moving cars to safe locations, clearing debris from driveways, and ensuring general winter readiness.

The upcoming storm is part of a larger weather pattern that will bring rain and snow to the Tahoe basin from Wednesday afternoon through Friday, with a potential break over the weekend before another storm system moves in by Sunday night).
