Earthquake of 4.4 Magnitude Strikes Pakistan Late Wednesday

Karachi, Pakistan – A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck Pakistan at 21:58:26 IST on Wednesday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 50 kilometers, had its epicenter located at latitude 31.08°N and longitude 68.84°E.
This tremor comes just two days after another earthquake of the same magnitude hit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat region. That earthquake occurred at a depth of 185 kilometers, with its epicenter in the Hindukush mountain range.
As the news broke, residents reported feeling the shaking across various regions of Pakistan. Many people evacuated buildings as a precaution. Fortunately, no injuries or property damage have been reported from any part of the affected areas.
Geological engineer Muhammad Rehan explained that Pakistan lies on three major tectonic plates–the Arabian, Euro-Asian, and Indian plates. This positioning creates five seismic zones within the country, making earthquakes a regular occurrence.
Previously, on April 12, a stronger earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted Pakistan, occurring at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. The NCS had warned that such shallow earthquakes could lead to potential aftershocks.
In light of these recent seismic events, residents remain cautious, aware of Pakistan’s vulnerability to earthquakes due to its geological makeup.
