Ecuador Assembly Elects Niels Olsen as New President Amid Reforms

QUITO, Ecuador – The Ecuadorian National Assembly elected Niels Olsen, a close ally of President Daniel Noboa, as its new president on Wednesday, ensuring Noboa has a majority to advance his anti-crime and economic reforms.
Olsen, backed by 80 legislators from Noboa’s National Democratic Action (ADN) party and smaller factions, was chosen during the assembly’s first meeting following elections in February. Noboa, a millennial business heir, secured a full term in April, promising to continue measures against crime and to attract private investment to boost the struggling economy.
Noboa also aims to implement reforms to comply with an International Monetary Fund deal. He initially won the presidency in 2023 to complete former President Guillermo Lasso’s term. Olsen, 37, previously served as the tourism minister under Lasso and remains close to Noboa’s administration.
Upon accepting the two-year position, Olsen stated, “I’m here to build and not to divide,” emphasizing the need for profound change in Ecuador. Despite expectations that a leftist politician would be named as first vice-president, another ADN member was elected instead, further solidifying Noboa’s control in the assembly.
Olsen’s leadership could facilitate the passage of important legislation as Noboa prepares for his inauguration on May 24. The president has expressed intentions to reform the justice system and strengthen security operations amidst rising violence. Interior Ministry data reveals a 65% increase in violent deaths during the first quarter of the year, culminating in 2,361 fatalities.
