Embattled Interim NYPD Commissioner Expected to Step Down Amid Ongoing Federal Probe
The interim Commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD), currently facing significant scrutiny, is anticipated to vacate his position, potentially as early as Friday, due to complications arising from a background check. This development comes amid federal investigations surrounding the NYPD’s nightlife enforcement operations, The New York Daily News reports.
Donlon was appointed by Mayor Eric Adams as the interim head following the resignation of his predecessor, former Commissioner Caban, who stepped down after federal agents seized his electronic devices. This action was part of a broader investigation into alleged corruption within the department.
In a startling turn of events mere days after assuming command, federal authorities descended upon Donlon’s residence, confiscating materials that Donlon claims were unrelated to his current role at the NYPD and had been in his possession for two decades.
The aftermath of the search has seen the halting of Donlon’s completed background check application, which is yet to be submitted to the Department of Investigation. Diane Struzzi, a spokesperson for the department, stated, “Therefore, DOI has not begun its background investigation.” The application requires detailed disclosures regarding any inquiries from federal, state, or local entities, as well as past subpoenas received.
While Donlon’s immediate successor remains unconfirmed, several sources indicate that Jessica Tisch, who served as the deputy commissioner for information technology under former Mayor Bill de Blasio, is a leading candidate. Tisch currently heads the sanitation department and has garnered substantial support, including an endorsement from City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, who praised her commitment and performance.
Also mentioned as a potential candidate is Ben Tucker, previously the first deputy NYPD commissioner. The office of Mayor Adams has refrained from commenting on the timing of the leadership transition or any succession plans.
Amid these uncertain circumstances, Mayor Adams voiced gratitude towards Donlon at a Times Square subway station press conference, where the interim commissioner was present. “We cannot thank him enough for coming in and moving to stabilize,” Adams remarked.
This internal upheaval within the NYPD occurs as the Adams administration continues to battle several corruption-related challenges. Recently, a former official was charged with seeking bribes from Turkish representatives, contributing to an ongoing storm of controversy at City Hall. These circumstances have resulted in multiple resignations over the past month, exacerbating the administration’s instability.
