Emmy Rossum Set to Star in Hulu’s Black Widow-Inspired Drama

LOS ANGELES, CA — Hulu has officially ordered a new drama series inspired by the 1987 film “Black Widow,” with actress Emmy Rossum in negotiations to star. The untitled series, written and executive produced by Liz Meriwether, explores the story of an FBI agent trying to uncover secrets from a female serial killer’s past.
According to multiple sources, if an agreement is finalized, Rossum will portray the lead FBI agent, leveraging her experience from previous roles like Fiona Gallagher in Showtime’s “Shameless.” In addition to acting, Rossum will also serve as an executive producer on the project, which has no confirmed release date yet.
The show’s plot centers around the protagonist’s efforts to capture a female serial killer by utilizing her past secrets. Meriwether, who is well-known for creating and executive producing the successful comedy series “New Girl,” will write for the series as well. She has also produced critically acclaimed works like “The Dropout,” which earned Amanda Seyfried an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress.
Joining Meriwether as executive producers are Sara Moskowitz via Rossum’s Production company, Composition 8, and Ronald Bass, who penned the original film. The production is a collaboration between 20th Television and Searchlight TV.
The 1987 film “Black Widow,” directed by Bob Rafelson, depicted the story of Catherine, a woman who murders men for their wealth, and Alexandra, a Department of Justice agent dedicated to bringing her to justice. This classic film stars Debra Winger and Theresa Russell.
Rossum recently starred in the Apple TV+ series “The Crowded Room” alongside Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried, adding to a diverse portfolio of roles. She also executive produced the Starz series “Three Women,” further showcasing her versatility in the entertainment industry.
As of now, details regarding the release window for the Hulu series remain undisclosed. Fans of both Rossum and the original film can look forward to this new adaptation.
