Mac Jones San Francisco 49ers Quarterback

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers are expected to start Mac Jones at quarterback for the second week in a row on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. This decision comes as starter Brock Purdy recovers from a toe injury that sidelined him last week.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday that it is ‘highly unlikely’ Purdy will play against the Cardinals, despite his progress during practice. ‘We’re just trying to see where he’s at to see if he can be a [No.] 2 or an emergency [No.] 3,’ Shanahan stated.

If approved, the 49ers must decide by Saturday afternoon whether to activate Purdy as backup or elevate practice squad quarterback Adrian Martinez to take the second slot. Shanahan indicated that the team would monitor Purdy’s status closely over the weekend.

‘Brock pushes himself to go as hard as anyone I’ve been around, but he’s very levelheaded in terms of being realistic,’ Shanahan said, adding that Purdy would communicate his availability honestly.

Meanwhile, injury issues persist for the 49ers. Offensive lineman Colby is also listed as questionable for the matchup due to a groin injury. His absence would compound the already challenging situation following the injury of starter [name] who has been placed on injured reserve.

Jones, who started in last week’s victory over the New Orleans Saints, praised his own performance, throwing for 279 yards and three touchdowns. ‘I definitely watched it and learned from it and took all the coaching points to improve,’ Jones said. ‘We’re just really focused on the Cardinals and stacking another good performance.’

In addition to Purdy and Colby, the team is dealing with injuries to wide receiver Jauan Jennings and rookie receiver [name], who will miss the game.
