Escalating Conflict in Myanmar: Junta Intensifies Attacks, Border Tensions Rise
The conflict in Myanmar has intensified in recent days, with the military junta launching widespread attacks against various regions, resulting in significant casualties and displacement of civilians. In Shan State, the junta has continued airstrikes, killing six civilians over a four-day period, according to reports from Myanmar Now.
In the southern Shan State, particularly in the mountainous areas, the junta and its allies have initiated a large-scale operation to retake villages held by anti-junta forces. This has led to heavy casualties on both sides, highlighting the escalating violence in the region.
The conflict has also had repercussions across the border, with Bangladesh facing increased tensions. Cross-border firing and shell landings have been reported in southeastern Bangladesh, particularly around Cox’s Bazar and St Martin's Island. Bangladesh has maintained a diplomatic approach, lodging protests against these incidents while emphasizing that it considers the conflict an internal affair of Myanmar.
The situation in Rakhine State is particularly complex, with the Arakan Army gaining ground against the Myanmar military. This development poses significant diplomatic and strategic challenges for Bangladesh, which is concerned about the impact on its territorial integrity and the repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
The humanitarian situation remains dire, with reports indicating that the Rohingya population is caught in the crossfire between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army. There are concerns about the potential for further displacement and the use of Rohingya by both sides in the conflict.
