FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The Ryder Cup opened with a shocking twist as Europe’s top players outperformed the U.S. team on the first day at Bethpage Black. Despite being the No. 1 player in the world, Scottie Scheffler struggled, losing both of his matches and failing to earn a point.

On Friday, the European team, led by Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, secured an impressive 5.5 to 2.5 lead. They dominated the morning foursomes with a 3-1 victory, followed by a successful showing in the afternoon four-ball matches.

U.S. captain Keegan Bradley expressed confidence in his team, despite the slow start. “We are not worried about Scottie Scheffler,” Bradley said, noting the team’s resilience. “Only 28% of the total points have been decided.”

In stark contrast, Scheffler and his partner J.J. Spaun lost 5 and 3 to Rahm and Sepp Straka during the morning session. Scheffler lamented, “We gave ourselves plenty of opportunities. It really just came down to me not holing enough putts.”

Bryson DeChambeau echoed that sentiment, mentioning how the Americans struggled to sink putts. “They made everything,” he noted, emphasizing the luck Europe seemed to have on the greens.

European captain Luke Donald praised his team’s performance. “Incredible day,” he said. “To win the morning was huge for us.” McIlroy’s near miss on an 11½-foot birdie attempt in a tied match highlighted how close the competition was.

The challenge continues for the U.S. team, with the Europeans aiming to retain the cup they won in Rome last year. As the two-day event progresses, the U.S. must regroup and rally to overcome the deficit.

Cameron Young, making his debut, emerged as a bright spot for the Americans, winning a point in the afternoon four-ball. “It’s pretty special,” Young said of playing in front of local fans.

Looking ahead, both teams are set to tackle more matches Saturday, with hopes to turn the tide of the competition.
